Profundus is a life science start-up company that specializes in the development of a ground-breaking camera and software system for advanced retinal imaging, utilizing adaptive optics. Our primary mission is to facilitate the early detection, prevention, and therefore treatment of various diseases by enabling the identification of changes in retinal microstructures. With a strong vision to make a significant difference in retinal imaging diagnostics, we aim to benefit patients worldwide.
As part of our initial progress, we have successfully delivered one Profundus camera to Oslo University Hospital, Norway, and another to Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Our company is currently transitioning into the commercialization phase and actively preparing for CE marking in accordance with MDR Class 2A requirements. At present, Profundus employs a dedicated team of seven professionals and is situated in the BioVentureHub, an esteemed innovation center hosted by AstraZeneca, located in Mölndal, Sweden. We are proud to have garnered financial support from both institutional and private investors.
The foundation of Profundus stems from a collaborative effort between four innovative researchers. Jörgen Thaung and Zoran Popovic, engineers with Master of Science degrees from Chalmers University of Technology and doctoral qualifications from the University of Gothenburg, recognized the need for an enhanced method of eye diagnostics during their research at the university’s ophthalmology department. They connected with Associate Professor Mette Owner-Petersen and PhD candidate Per Knutsson, who were part of a research group at the department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Lund University who were working on multi-conjugate adaptive optics for ground-based telescope applications.
These four researchers leveraged their respective expertise, allowing the ophthalmology specialists to access unique knowledge while affording the astronomers the opportunity to witness the implementation of their technology first-hand. Together, they addressed a range of advanced technical challenges, culminating in the development of a patented method for advanced eye diagnostics.
Profundus will make a significant difference in retinal imaging diagnostics for the benefit of patients all around the world.
